Welcome back #SoundLovers🎶! We had an amazing opportunity to meet with the members of SUPERKIND during their round table to talk about their most recent comeback and to reminisce about their first time meeting each other.
Seven-member boy group, SUPERKIND is known as the world's first gen A-idol, where SUPERKIND’s AI members and human members perform together. The group is composed of human members DAEMON, EUGENE, GEON, SiO, and JDV, and AI members SAEJIN and SEUNG. Their group name, SUPERKIND, is an anagram of NUKE, PRID, and S. NUKE refers to members from the virtual world, and PRID refers to members from the real world. They work together towards achieving one common goal, which is to find S, which, as of now, still remains a secret to everyone. Although this was a first, and the idea of A-idol was new, the group made it to the top 10 of Rolling Stone India's list of the best rookie groups in 2022.
On October 18, SUPERKIND returns with the release of their new mini-album, Profiles of the Future (Λ) : 70%. This is the group’s first comeback as a full set of seven members, including both AI members SAEJIN and SEUNG. The album follows their slogan "2Dx3D, Dimensions Assemble!" by strategically combining elements of both 2D and 3D. The album narrates a Sci-Fi cyberchase in which NUKE (AI members) are chasing PRID (human members) as wanted criminals.
The album includes four new songs. The title track, “Beam me up (2Dx3D),” conveys a multidimensional sound by implementing both acoustic and digital elements. It also achieves this by combining two of the songs on the album, “Beam me up (3D)” and “Speed (2D).” “Speed (2D)” takes inspiration from the anime, Cowboy Bebop to create a sound that is reminiscent of a classic anime opening and serves to represent the 2D aspect of the album. The combined track also incorporates Japanese lyrics to further add to the concept. “Beam me up (3D)” in comparison, is meant to represent the 3D aspect of the album and offers a re-interpretation of the movie, Men in Black. It uses its kick and bass rhythms to create a more digital sound. And the final track, “MUGSHOT” blends Latin drill music and K-pop to narrate the unfolded chase from the viewpoint of PRID. It is the only song that completed all the quests from the Social Music Mining Game played by members of SUPERKIND and their fans, Players, and emerged as the sole selection among numerous other choices.
Check out our mini interview with the members below:
K FUSE: What message did you wnt to deliver to your fans with Profiles of the Future (Λ) : 70%?
SiO: While this album explores a vast universe and the story of 2D and 3D merging, the message we want to convey isn't overly complex. For instance, in the lyrics of the 2D tracker, there is a part that mentions me saving you in times of hardship. Similarly, the message is of hope, reassuring that no matter the diffivulties and challenges you encounter, there will always be someone to help you through it. So, don't be too down and find the strength to keep going.
KFUSE: What members did you click with instantly?
SiO: I've known EUGENE for along time, dating back to about five years ago when I was in the second grade of middle school. So, when I initially joined this company, it was comforting to have EUGENE there with me, and he really helped me to adapt.
DAEMON: Before debut, I shared a room with EUGENE so I hung out with him a lot. So before debut and also now, I really clicked with EUGENE.
JDV: SiO was the last member of the group I met. In the case of the other members who are all older than me, I had to be a bit more polite, which was somewhat challing initially. It has certainly improved over time. With SiO, even though we were a bit awkward when we first met, we're the same age, so I felt more comfortable around him.
EUGENE: They've all said what I wanted ot say. I think I felt most comfortable with SiO and DAEMON.
