On Sunday, May 5, 2024, Nine, the leader of OnlyOneOf, effortlessly and beautifully sang “Sunday mornin’, rain is fallin,’” a snippet of “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5, to a crowd full of lyOns (OnlyOneOf’s fandom name). The six-member K-pop group OnlyOneOf made their last stop of the United States leg of Things I Can’t Say LOve world tour at The Novo in Los Angeles, California. This marks the group’s second tour in the U.S. as they toured last year on the Grand America Tour but this is OnlyOneOf’s first world tour. Starting in Seoul the tour kicked off and made its way to Japan, South America, Canada, the U.S., and now will continue in June over in Europe and ending in Asia in July. Before the tour started the members made a comeback at the beginning of this year with their sixth mini-album resembling the same name as the tour, Things I Can’t Say LOve, that was released on January 10.
The group started off the night with a bang performing the high-energy title track, “dOpamine” from their most recent mini-album. The group stopped to talk and introduce each member. After, they went right back to performing “dOra maar” and “gaslighting.” During the performance of “gaslighting” the signature dance move the members do in the choreography during the chorus is that they pump out their chest to the beat of the song. During this time cheers and screams were heard at full volume throughout The Novo. During the next talking MENT, Mill said, “Since lyOns love our chest pumps should we show you guys again?” Then he yelled, “Do you guys want it?” and Youjung flipped off his jean jacket revealing more of his t-shirt and gave a serious yet playful look into the crowd. KB told fans that they were probably recording beforehand and weren’t probably able to focus on watching so he told fans this time they could just take in the choreography with their eyes. OnlyOneOf was pretty nice to give lyOns a second taste of their chest pumping choreography.
For “give me the love bitxx” the fans did the stirring motion with their arms while the performance occurred but beforehand the group went through rehearsing it before and after the performance saying that the fans got better at the choreography now compared to last tour. “gravity” is a feel good song that had the fans swaying and waving their hands from side to side in the air.
“I’m drawn to you like gravity, gravity yeah (gravity, yeah)” - “gravity” by OnlyOneOf
During the next talking MENT, KB exclaimed to the crowd, “You guys all slay!” And then Rie said, “Slay…and period!” repeating “period” a couple times after too. KB mentioned that he has been trying to tell the members to use “period” for two years and now they are using it causing some laughter from the crowd. The members went on to say “LA period” and KB ended with rhyming “pyramid” but Rie said that KB wasn’t a funny guy bringing laughter from the crowd. The members went on to say it was important that he tried though.
To lyOns surprise, OnlyOneof performed “bOss” which wasn’t previously on any of the setlists during the tour. Rie said he had asked lyOns what songs they liked and “bOss” had been said many times therefore the group wanted to. The energy heightened when the intro of “seOul drift” came on and Mill jumped over KB kicking the air and yelling “Make some noise!” To go with the vibes of the song, race car visuals were on screen in the background and blue and magenta streaks of lights were flashing behind the members.
OnlyOneOf stands out as a group in the K-pop industry as they are one of the only groups to talk and show themes of queer representation in their music. A year ago, OnlyOneOf put out a series of solo songs with music videos titled “undergrOund idOl.” Continuing and expanding themes of queer and LGBTQIA+ community representation that were seen in their previous releases the members talked about disapproved or forbidden love, freedom, blossoming love, a feeling of intense longing for one’s love, and more. During the show, each member of the group had a short time to perform snippets of their “undergrOund idOl” songs “begin” (YooJung), “be free” (KB), “be mine” (JunJi), “because” (Rie), “beat” (Mill), and “beyOnd” (Nine). KB showed his charisma during his performance as he came out with a vintage style mic stand, wore black suit, and the gold lights shone with gold background visuals. YooJung also joined him to dance together on stage while mirroring eachothers dance moves and holding onto each end of the mic stand. During Nine’s solo performance of “beyOnd” the lights were dim and all that was seen on stage was two silhouettes of Nine and Mill but soon the lights turned on and one part of the dance, synchronously, fans’ phones rose up as both members were on the ground for the dance choreography trying to catch the performance. Because the group is only allotted certain time with each tour stop they have to pick and choose songs on the setlist and the members said they wished they could show fans their full performances of each song but hope to in the future. Each member got to show their colors and style during the solo performances.
Fans were ready for this next performance of the song “libidO” (iykyk). Later in the concert, the vibes switched to more sentimental songs and the mic stands were brought out for “mirage.” The way the members were backlit and the light sticks swaying in the air created a special sight.
LA was the 19th stop of the tour and the energy from the members was still there the whole time. The concert ended and lyOns surely left with their expectations fulfilled from the sexy choreography, funny moments from the members personalities, beautiful stage lighting, and just great music to spend the night hearing live. During the performance of “angel (Prod. by GRAY)” JunJi ripped his white tank top off that already had a slit in the top of it, forewarning in the beginning of the show that some point it would come off, finally it did. Nine playfully stole his tour shirt and spun it in the air to tease him. JunJi was shirtless until he chased Nine around the stage finally getting a hold of the shirt.
Each member gave their last speeches acknowledging their love and thanks to fans. While Rie made his speech there was a long-standing cheer from fans for him. Then after he finished talking about the challenges on tour with health issues and the amount of hard work that was put into the tour he was choked up with emotions. Rie had to turn his back to the crowd as he teared up. Rie was able to finish his speech after JunJi, saying the reason they were here today is because of the fans, members, and staff. YooJung said, “There’s one thing I came to realize during this tour. Even if I’m born again I want to be part of OnlyOneOf again. And when I’m born again I want to be a celebrity [happy laughter came from the crowd] it was that much fun.” He went on to say that everywhere on tour the fans gave them so much support and love which also gave them that feeling of comfort. “If we meet again in the next life I hope you guys become a lyOn again. We love you.” This group has so much love for their fans and group members. The members break boundaries with their music and the stories they want to tell. We look forward to OnlyOneOf’s future releases and endeavors.
